Victoria’s Corner – Lasting Impressions

The post today is inspired by a text I got from a woman I’ve been friends with since we were 8 years old (28 years or so).

Out of the blue, she texts me, “Do you remember a character by the name of Darian who was a gorgeous blonde vampire? I think it was a series of three books. She kept pursuing a moping vampire through the years.”

Given how many books there are about moping vampires, the chances of me remembering it seemed remote. But something about how she put it made me think of the name “David”. So I did a quick google search, and as I searched, the name “David Morrissey” rang a very strong bell. It took about 15 minutes of googling different combinations (I don’t watch the Walking Dead, but apparently there’s a character named David Morrissey on it) of words that included vampires, 1990s and David. She thought maybe Obsession might be the title.

And I FOUND the books. Hehe. It was the David de Morrissey series by Lori Herter. The first book is Obsession. (I didn’t google the title because I figured there were dozens of books called Obsession) and didn’t expect to find anything that way. As soon as I found the books on Goodreads, I had a visceral memory of loving the covers. Here they are:

ObsessionConfession

PossessionEternity

It was the cover for Possession that gripped me most back in the day. And I’ll be honest, I haven’t read this series since probably the mid 1990′s, but I still remember them, and I certainly still absolutely love and react to the cover of Possession.

So, here’s the question/topic for discussion today: Do you have any book covers that spark certain reactions, even long-lasting memories?

Victoria’s Corner – Sports in Books

Happy Thursday and welcome to May everyone!

This week I want to talk about books that have sports in them in some way (I don’t mean “Football for Dummies” –if there is such a book–, I mean characters involved in professional sports). What do you think about them?

Personally, it depends on 1) how well the author does with them, and 2) how familiar I am with the sport.

For example, in the Sherrilyn Kenyon/Dianne Love Belador series, it takes place in Atlanta. It doesn’t involve baseball at all, but of course Atlanta is the home of the (dur) Atlanta Braves and I am, or was, a HUGE Braves fan. In the very first book, they reference the Braves’ baseball stadium as being Fulton County Stadium. That threw me entirely out of the book (for a very brief time, mind) because I knew the Braves moved in to Turner Field at the start of the 1997 season and the stadium itself was demolished in 1997. So it was jarring a little for me. Not sure how they could have made such a basic error, unless that one little detail was something they changed in the universe they created.

Obviously the above isn’t a sports-heavy book example. However, Bianca Sommerland has a series about the Dartmouth Cobras (an ice-hockey team with a very … interesting shared interest). I know nothing about ice hockey other than hockey players use a different kind of blade than figure skaters (thank you The Cutting Edge). The sport is a big part of the books, because some of the main characters are owners of the team, the heroes are always MEMBERS of the team, and frequently parts of the plot circle around whatever’s going on in the hockey world. Knowing nothing about the sport, I can’t speak as to how accurate Ms. Sommerland is about the sport, but I can say it enhances the whole “real” feeling to the book, having such devoted sports players.

I bring this up because of a book I just read (Skin in the Game, review coming toward the end of the month) where football was an important facet of the story.

So, what do YOU think about stories (romances specifically) where a given sport plays an important role in the story somehow?

Until next week, have a great time and keep on readin’!

Victoria’s Corner

Just a quick topic this week: Spring

Yup, I’m talking about the time of year, peeps. Here in Florida, it’s raining today. The temperatures are in the mid to upper 70′s as highs, and somewhere in the 50′s or 60′s for lows. We don’t currently need the heater or the a/c (much) yet. Spring is truly a great season. I’m fond of autumn for the same reasons.

What’s your favorite season and why?

And just so we can have a book-related topic as well: what are you reading right now? What’s next on your list?

I’m currently reading One Night With a Rake (Marlow/Mason) and Ethan (Burrowes). I’ve got a Keri Arthur book that I’m looking forward to reading too shortly.

Victoria’s Corner – Favorite Subgenre

Good morning/evening, my dearly beloved friends. It’s been a great week in my world, for the most part.

So, the topic this week is talking about subgenres of romance (both your favorite and what you might not like).

For me, while I love me some Harlequin Presents (alpha Greek billionaire, yes please!), contemporary romances in general bore me. And give me a cowboy western (I’ve been less than, hmm, thrilled with the couple I’ve reviewed here at Molly’s place, which is why Victoria doesn’t review cowboy stories any more) and I’ll show you a wall-banger.

Historicals, when well written, are a particular favorite, and I’ve gotten to enjoy reading ones set in the Georgian period, as opposed to the much more common/popular Regencies (specifically, I’m thinking about Elizabeth Hoyt’s Maiden Lane series).

Paranormal romance, wowser. Definitely a big fan of this genre. I just gulped down Lara Adrian’s entire Midnight Breed series in under two weeks (might have done it faster, but I had to wait on the last one – book four in the series as it turned out – to get available at the library). Kresley Cole’s pleasing, but Larissa Ione…OMG (see my review of Rogue Rider for a far more exuberant commentary on it).

Mix historical and paranormal (Lydia Dare, Tammy Falkner, etc.) and I’m in mad looooove with the book. At least when it’s done as fantastically as those ladies do. However, when done badly (Brooklyn Ann’s Bite Me Your Grace comes immediately to mind, review forthcoming VERY soon), I have another breed of wall-banger. At least that particular book would have banged my wall if it wouldn’t have involved throwing my husband’s iPad at the wall.

So, share with me, ladies and gents. I am always looking for great suggestions for new authors. What do you like to read, and what do you hate to read?

Next week’s topic is up for grabs. I’ll happily take suggestions, or I might have to torture you with lawyer jokes! Muahaha.

Have a happy, sexy, safe week, everyone!
