Okay. I gotta be honest here. When I first started reading this book, I was almost positive I wouldn’t be able to give this book more than a 3 in rating. I felt like the book was slow going and just not all that gripping. But, knowing I like to push on and give a book a chance, I did just that and I am happy to say this: Deanna Roy’s Stella & Dane quickly went from a 3 to a 5! The characters quickly became real to me after pushing through the slow first chapter.
Broken down into 3 parts, Stella & Dane tells the story of two broken souls who can’t catch a break in small town living. Dane just moved to Holly, MO….and Stella wants as far away from there as possible. Both just want to find where they fit; where they belong. I’m not sure who my heart went out to more, Stella or Dane. Both of these characters were truly tortured on the inside with their emotions and they just couldn’t catch a break from anyone, except sweet Beatrice and lovable Joe! Stella didn’t get along with her mom and her grandma Angie-the one person she was truly close to- was dying. No need to stay in Holly at all. Then she laid eyes on Dane.
Dane is every woman’s “bad boy” dream…tall, dark, dangerous….and tenderhearted. Transplanted from Texas after his mom dies, he’s come to Holly to work at the mechanic’s shop his brother Ryker works at. Dating a woman he’s not really into other than she’s great in bed, he meets Stella…..and propositions her to meet him up on the town’s water tower. When he gets there, he’s over come with feelings for the beautiful Stella, right there on the ladder, and someone sees them. Now, he’s in deep water with his ex’s brother….and in prison for manslaughter.
Bu, despite the short time knowing Dane, Stella knows what she feels only comes once in a life time and is real. She vows to stand by him…..even if 12 years of prison visits is all they’ll ever have.
Ms. Roy’s talent ended up shining brightly. I laughed at Stella’s quirkiness, and cried for the treatment Dane received because he wasn’t a local. It seemed truly unfair! In the end, I was still crying for Stella & Dane, and all they had to endure, but I was smiling for the true love that can conquer all things.
While this 5 Book worthy novel ended up being an un-put-downable read, it’s not a light one. It will definitely twist your heart all up and leave you spinning. I am looking forward to going back and reading more about Stella & Dane in Baby Dust, and in Kayleigh & Jude, Ms. Roy’s next novel coming in 2013!

It must be a fabulous story to push up from a 3 to a 5. I am looking forward to this.

thank you for hosting Deanna today
It sounds like a great story, but it also seems to have a lot of tragedy in it. I am so glad it has a HEA ending.
Thank you for your thoughtful review! I’m glad the book turned around for you. One thing has been certain–the book has caused a stir!
Gotta have the HEA, but a quirky heroine never hurts!

I had the same “laughing and crying” reaction to S&D. Nice review!
Thanks for the review – this sounds like a really good romance
Thanks for the review, if a book starts slow it is hard for me to keep going to it is good to know it was worth it in the end to get involved in this story

Molly…What a great review. Too often, I suspect, I give up reading something that’s slow to get started. It’s nice to know that if I start reading this one, I shouldn’t give up on it!
